What is Meningitis

Meningitis is an infection (bacterial or viral) where the flesh that is used to protect the brain and spinal cord become compromised.

It is known to affect anyone, with young adults, children, and babies being the most likely effected.

Symptoms

Symptoms of meningitis develop suddenly and can include:

  • a high temperature (fever)
  • being sick
  • a headache
  • a rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (but a rash will not always develop)
  • a stiff neck
  • a dislike of bright lights
  • drowsiness or unresponsiveness
  • seizures (fits)

Meningitis can be fatal, please call 999 for an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E if you think you or someone you care for may have it.
